As a black woman with style sense, it would be with remiss if I didn’t showcase talented and creative black designers. It is of utter importance that recognition is received across a myriad of platforms. I have purchased pieces from Hanifa, Sai Sankoh, Diarrablu, Sika, Tongoro Studio, and Fe Noel to name a few. A recent purchase of mine is the Isle of Spice dress from Fe Noel. What I love most besides the vibrant shades of red, green, and yellow are the wilted sleeves and the feeling of tropical elegance when worn. This dress is deemed multi-way (can be styled multiple ways). The styling options that come to mind for multi-way are for the dress to be worn in a wrap style (pictured below), in robe form with a swimsuit, or with a top and bottoms while vacationing in warmer climates, as well as spring and summer.
Isle of Spice Wrap Dress – Fe Noel
Let’s get into a few pieces from the spring/summer 2022 “SS22” wishlist:
Lola Netted Dress Jade – Fe Noel
Fe Noel is a womenswear designer from Brooklyn, NY. Fe is heavily influenced by her Caribbean heritage. I love the brand’s mantra of eat well, travel often, and dress to inspire. Realistically our clothes may not always be inspirational, yet to put that in focus is a beautiful thing. I see various forms of clothing as art and Fe Noel gets that aspect. To travel the world in an aesthetically pleasing way is an experience. The Lola Netted Dress is a showstopper with netting detail and flouncy sleeves. This piece also comes in a bone color and most suitable over a swimsuit, bodysuit, or camisole type dress.
Orange Charlotte Blouse – saisankoh
Sai Sankoh is a fashion brand blended with vintage and modern style. Sai is a native of Sierra Leone and deeply inspired by Old Hollywood. If you have checked my feed or highlights, you will see me in a kaftan from the brand and it was definitely giving poolside glam. Orange will be the color of the season. The Charlotte set is bringing all the vibes.
Shop Andrea Iyamah Sade Cover-Up Dress | Saks Fifth Avenue
Andrea Iyamah is a Nigerian designer. Her clothing line is inspired by ethnic cultures and elements of nature. The brand stands behind bold colors and defintely delivers on that. The cover up dresses serve great purpose beach side and add a touch of elegance for a summer dinner.
Xena Gathered Stretch-Cotton Maxi Dress By Andrea Iyamah | Moda Operandi
Another piece from Andrea Iyamah is the Xena dress. It’s currently on pre-order and already a bestseller. Cut-outs will stay trending and Xena checks the box for that. The plunging neckline, elbow length sleeves, and tie-cuffs are added character to the dress design.
Hanifa is based out of the Washington, D.C. area. The designer behind the brand is Anifa M. Her design mission is centered around women without limits and a unique visionary I must say. I recall ordering from Hanifa about 5 to 6 years ago which, was before the brand catapulted to deserving recognition. I was a fan then and the customer service was of parity. There is nothing more inspiring than a woman who stays true to her craft when the world seems to not notice and emerge as a disruptor in her industry. The juxtaposition of mesh, knitwear, and various hues make for a flawless design in the Jax Knit Gown.
